If you made the sod cutter the width of the tractor you'd then be driving over sod that that you just cut. If you made it narrower than the tractor and cut successive rows out then one side of the tractor would be on dirt (where you just cut the sod and rolled it up) while the other side would be on grass (where you haven't cut sod out) and would be titled by the thickness of sod you just cut. Then again the angle of cutting would be the same if it was front or rear mounted. That sod cutter also had the knife behind the drive wheel(s). From what I remember the knife kept wanting to pull up out of the sod. Pushing down on the back of the sod cutter to keep the knife down made the drive wheels light and would then not propel the sod cutter forward. It was a constant battle, and a heck of a workout. Though I can't see how it couldn't be adapted to a garden tractor somehow. Keep us posted if you get it working.

I was only thinking about 12'-14' wide cuts of sod. I have some good sections of grass mostly out back that I would like to take just a little at a time (and let it grow back in that spot) then put it out in the front yard where I have trash grass but just doing a little at a time depending on time, physical ability and sanity. I didn't figure renting a hand sod cutter was practical either physically or economical for just one or two cuts here and there that's why I wanted to make a homemade one or at least that the idea.
